When you think of a classic John Deere tractor you are probably thinking of the John Deere 4020. Made from 1963 to 1972 and part of the New Generation series of John Deere tractors, the 4020 model was manufactured in Waterloo, IA and partially in Mexico. It was available with an optional front end loader and had a 6 cylinder engine. A total of 184,879 John Deere 4020 models were made and the retail price was $10,345.

The John Deere 4020 was the first tractor made to really haul that John Deere made. Instead of pulling just a baler, for instance, like previous models, this tractor was able to pull a baler plus a wagon and a bale ejector, doubling and tripling the amount it could haul. The 4020 model was offered, at the start, able to be powered by gasoline, diesel or LP-gas. By the late 1960’s the LP-gas option was no longer made and until 1972 only two options of engine were available. Another significant aspect of the 4020 was the virtual combining of the standard and row-crop tractor. The 4020 certainly made waves in the tractor world when it was introduced.

For a newer model that emulates the 4020, look no further than the John Deere 6400. Made from 1992 – 1998 in Mannheim, Baden-Wurttemberg in Germany, this tractor had an 85 hp, 4 cylinder engine and was exclusively diesel powered. Made with 2WD with an optional 4WD package, it was possible to get the exact tractor you wanted for a reasonable price.  It had a retail price of $32,500 and was a much admired model.

The John Deere 6400 can still be found in action today and still remains popular.  It was not huge but certainly had power, which was very important with this tractor due to its smaller size. It was also fairly cheap compared to other models that were on the market at the same time. There were a number of front end loader attachments available and also had a high breakout force.

The John Deere 6400 is still available on the market as used models and is highly recommended. If you are looking for a great tractor that affordable at about $15,000 in good condition, the 6400 model may be perfect for your needs. Large enough to get the job done but small enough to get into awkward areas, this model has stood the test of time.
