When asking the question, “Is oatmeal good for you?” the answer is probably going to be yes. Probably yes? It depends on what type of oatmeal you are asking about. The packet oatmeal you buy at the super market probably isn’t great for you since it contains a lot of sugar, added fat and empty calories. If you are talking about that type of oatmeal and ask:”Is oatmeal good for you?” the answer will be no.

If you are talking about rolled oats or steel cut oats, however, and say “Is oatmeal good for you?” the answer will be a resounding yes!  These types of oats are excellent for you in fact. If you want some of the best food in the world to put in your system, definitely eat oats. They have amazing nutrition like whole grains filled with B vitamins, protein, fiber and calcium. They are low in salt and saturated fat, which is very bad for you. Eating these whole grain oats can help reduce high blood pressure and cholesterol and is also a great defense against cancer, diabetes and heart disease.  They also contain powerful antioxidants that can help your body stay healthy!

One way to make great oatmeal infused with flavor is to cook it in a slow cooker or crock pot. Slow cooker oatmeal can be tasty and convenient, especially because it tends to take steel cut oatmeal, especially, a long time to make. One very easy recipe for slow cooker oatmeal is here: In your crock pot mix ½ cup half half, 4 cups of water and 1 cup of the following – steel cut oats, dried cranberries and dried figs. Set the slow cooker on low and cook overnight, 8-9 hours. When you wake up, the oatmeal will be ready and waiting.

Especially good on a cold, winter’s morning, this slow cooker oatmeal recipe is sure to please: In your slow cooker, mix 2 cups of milk, 1 cup of steel cut oats and a cup of diced apples. Stir and then add ¼ cup of brown sugar, 1 tbsp melted butter, ¼ tsp salt, ½ tsp cinnamon and a half cup each dates or raisins and chopped walnuts. Stir it all up, put the lid on and cook overnight, 7-8 hours.

A few things to note when making oatmeal in the crock pot is to always prepare  the pot with cooking spray before making and always stir well before serving it to make sure all the ingredients are well mixed.
