Braces for everyone can be very expensive. It is estimated that braces to straighten teeth cost, on average, about $6000 – $8000. This is for typical metal braces. Any other type of tooth straightening device will be priced differently. Many families can just not afford the cost of braces so the first thing they thing about is if there is dental insurance for braces.  Even more families may not even have dental insurance and are wondering just exactly how much is dental insurance and if it even covers braces. The answer to the first question is yes, it is possible to get dental insurance for braces, but not every dental insurance policy will cover braces. The answer to the second question, how much is dental insurance, is that it varies widely. Both will be explored a bit more throughout this article.

As soon as you find out that you or your family member will need braces, you should make sure you have some kind of dental insurance for braces in place. As mentioned above, not all plans have a coverage option for braces, so make sure if you have insurance currently that it will cover the cost of braces. If you do not have insurance, you should definitely start doing your research. If you are able to get insurance through your employer, you should attempt to do that during the open enrollment time. If you do not have the option to get insurance through your employer, you can look online for independent dental plans. If insurance is not an option for some reason, you can also get a discount card from most insurance companies which can help on costs.

Before choosing a new dental insurance plan for braces, you should make sure that you have first found a quality dentist who also does orthodontics. From the dentist office, the receptionist should be able to give you an estimate of the cost and let you know what type of insurance plans they take and if they even accept insurance at all. There are usually two different kinds of insurance, a dental discount plan as mentioned above, or traditional dental insurance.

If you go with a dental discount plan, you will likely get a certain flat percentage off of your dental services. Typically this is about 20% off of your dental services, so if a cleaning at a dentist is $100, you will only pay $80 since you have this discount plan. You will have to pay an entrance fee into the plan and also a monthly membership fee. For braces, if they are $5000 total, a dental discount plan will save you about $1000.

A traditional plan will usually cover more significant amounts for your orthodontic care but not all plans cover braces as mentioned above. Once you can confirm that orthodontics are covered, you then will need to look for the premiums, deductibles, co-pay and exclusions. The premium is the amount you will pay for your insurance, the deductible is a cash limit on the policy. The co-pay is the amount out of pocket you will need to pay and exclusions are things that are not covered on the policy. When you are looking at a benefit page, it will usually have the percentage covered. Generally it is anything from 50% to 100% depending on the plan you have. Another thing you need to keep in mind when getting a quote is that there is usually an associated waiting period on coverage. Sometimes you may be able to get an exam as soon as you get the insurance, but you will likely not be able to get anything like braces until a waiting period is over, for instance 6 -12 month is typical. When considering insurance for braces, you should make sure that they offer a list of providers and find out rather or not the orthodontist you want is on the list. If not, you will have to pay full price, choose another orthodontist or possibly, depending on your plan, pay a discounted full price.

So how much is dental insurance? Well, if you go with an individual plan, it can run anywhere from $10 – $40 per month depending on the type of plan you get. If you go with a family plan, which will likely be the case if this is your child who needs braces, expect to pay approximately $60- $200 per month. It is likely that only the higher priced plans will actually cover orthodontics.
